The habitats of the coastal sand dunes along the beachfront of Ashdod are a disappearing natural asset due to development processes. As part of the park’s restoration, local plant species, some of which are rare, have been reintroduced, characterized by the dune soils and wetland areas. The local vegetation allows for a rich biological diversity of wildlife, including small mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects.
The sand dunes, shown on the map, demonstrate how various factors such as distance from the sea, topographical structure, and soil type enable the development of a rich biological diversity.
The unique conditions of the sandy habitat have forced wildlife to develop adaptations, such as long legs that allow them to raise their heads above the hot sand; most of these species are nocturnal, thus avoiding the heat during daylight hours; some reptiles escape the heat by burrowing beneath the surface of the sand.
Under the sign of Tuvia, there is a list of wildlife species.
